Los Angeles Wedding Photography: Fashion, Fun & Candid Moments
I recently flew to Los Angeles to photograph Jaime and Phil’s wedding in Silverlake. When we spoke about what they wanted to take away from the day, they emphasized how important candid wedding photography was to them.
They wanted to be able to look back at photos of their best friends and family enjoying the day and dancing the night away like maniacs - they also wanted to include film.
I was thrilled.
GETTING READY
Breaking away from traditional wedding norms, Jaime and Phil got ready together at The Hoxton hotel in Downtown LA. While Jaime was getting makeup done, Phil was in the hotel lobby putting final touches on his vows.
EDENDALE
Jaime and Phil rented out Edendale, their favorite restaurant in Los Angeles, for the ceremony and reception. It wasn’t a typical event for the them (I believe they’re going to start booking more weddings there), but it was an incredible space with six distinct rooms/areas for guests to hang out.
AMERICAN GOTHIC MEETS The Addams family
We took advantage of the time we had before the ceremony to take a few portraits - some on a beautiful velvet couch that was surrounded by flowers and victorian photographs, and some in front of the venue’s dumpster (which the couple gleefully requested).
Ceremony
A lot of laughs and a lot of tears. In another turn from traditional weddings, there weren’t bridesmaids or groomsman and Jaime and Phil had their friend Austin officiate the wedding. They all met while living in New York City, with Jaime working in fashion and Phil and Austin working as actors/comedians (if you look through these photos you may see a few celebrities pop out). It was a touching ceremony, embracing love, loss, and incredibly funny vows that kept friends and family teary-eyed the entire time.
RECEPTION
With no formal dinner, the wedding reception was a whirlwind of cocktails and delicious food flying around. Speeches were open to anyone who wanted to make one and they were all hilarious and heartfelt. The first dance followed, with the floor opening up shortly after and a cake cutting that included wooden figurines of the bride, groom, and their cat Randy.
At weddings like this, whenever I get a moment to reflect, I can’t believe that I get to document them for a living. It’s such a joy watching family and friends smile and laugh until it hurts.
